Winona Laura Horowitz who is professionally known in the media as Winona Ryder was born in Winona Minnesota. Parents of Winona Ryder gave her the name of her hometown. Michel Horowitz was her father as well as Cynthia Palmer, his mother, were both authors as well as editors. Ryder's dad was born into the Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. The actress is the younger sister of Uria and half-siblings Jubal as well as Sunyata. Ryder's parents moved her along with her siblings in Mendocino County California when Ryder reached seven. In those days, there was no electricity. Ryder was a consummate bookworm and would spend her days studying books since there was no TV. Ryder started to take acting classes at American Conservatory Theatre when she was 12 years old. Lucas, a 1986 film, was her first major role. Ryder was fifteen when she landed the role. Ryder had to deal with bullying throughout her time in high school. She hoped that the acting profession would change that. Sadly, this didn't occur. However, she kept working towards her dreams. In 1988, in the year Tim Burton released Beetlejuice that gave her her first big break. Ryder continued playing characters that made a splash in several movies. In 1993 she received two nominations to win Academy Awards. One of the nominations was for her part as a character in The Age of Innocence.
