Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. Nancy Wilson was born on the 20th of February, 1937 in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson who was a worker at an ironworks and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic worker. Nancy is the youngest out of 6 siblings. Nancy was a child who listened to her dad's records and his love for music. When she was young she had already developed the impression of her identity and what she hoped to accomplish. Church choirs encouraged her to develop the talent. Following her win in a talent show in a television show around the age of 15 years old, she began appearing regularly in Skyline Melodies, while still at high school. The same year she started working in nightclubs. Nancy was 17 when she graduated highschool. After enrolling at Ohio Central State College - which is now Central State University - for only one semester Nancy went on to become professional performers. She recorded her first record in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956 with whom she was on tour from 1956 until 1958. Nancy's very first Dot Records recording was made while she was in the Carolyn Club Big Band. Cannonball Adderley advised her that she needed to relocate in New York to further her professional career. She moved there to The Big Town to begin her career in 1959. In just a few months, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. Adderley's representative heard her sing and immediately agreed to sign her. His agent signed her with Capitol in 1960. She made her debut that year. Guess who I saw today? Her albums were a hit and Capitol issued 5 Nancy Wilson albums in two years. Adderley encouraged her to shift away from R&B in favor of the torch and jazz genres. Nancy Wilson's 1962 collaboration in 1962 with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top, and in 1963, she had her debut hit Tell Me the Truth. The following year the release, she was being booked at the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
